English: Tilman Riemenschneider (around 1460 Heiligenstadt - 1531 Würzburg). The apparition of Christ to Maria Magdalena from the Münnerstädter Altar, 1490-1492. Limewood. Riemenschneider's Münnerstädter Retabel is one of the earliest works that was delivered without a color version. The relief, originally on the left wing, shows Mary Magdalene's encounter with Christ after his resurrection. Riemenschneider is here repeating a composition by Martin Schongauer. Paradoxically, his figure seems to have less volume than that of the engraver, as if the sculptor were trying to transfer graphic design elements into relief art.

Riemenschneiders Münnerstädter Retabel gehört zu den frühesten Werken, die ohne Farbfassung geliefert wurden. Das Relief, ursprünglich auf dem linken Flügel, zeigt die Begegnung Maria Magdalenas mit Christus nach dessen Auferstehung. Riemenschneider wiederholt hier eine Komposition Martin Schongauers. Paradoxerweise scheinen seine Figur weniger Volumen zu haben als die des Kupferstechers, als würde der Bildhauer versuchen, grafische Gestaltungsmittel in die Reliefkunst zu übertragen. |
