Bonaire 2008: Exploring Coral Reef Sustainability with New Technologies: Jan 24 Log Rock Hind (Epinephelus adscensionis) in a sponge photographed while free diving off Klien Bonaire in about 20 feet of water. Image courtesy of Bonaire 2008: Exploring Coral Reef Sustainability with New Technologies, Chris Coccaro, NOAA-OE.

Solitary carnivore lurks in wrecks, reef shadows, or ledges; draws prey into gullet by powerful suction from opening large mouth; swallows prey whole after holding it in small rasp like teeth that cover the jaws, tongue and palate. Rock Hind fish are hermaphroditic and are in the Serranidae / Sea basses (Groupers) family beginning life as females, then change to males with maturity.
