Rua do Amparo
Até ao Edital da CML de 28/8/1950, a Rua do Amparo estendia-se da Praça D. Pedro IV (Rossio) à rua do Arco do Marquês de Alegrete (Poço do Boaratém) [*]; a partir desta data, este arruamento ficou limitado pelas Pralas de D. Pedro e da Figueira. À esquerda, a antiga loja de ferragens «Viúva Thiago da Silva» (1850) e o «Hotel Continental» ; à direita a «Casa Suissa», fundada em 1910, mas, à data, um estabelecimento de fazendas e retrosaria
Como já te acentuei, o Rossio do lado oriental tem uma fisionomia, e até um movimento, em tudo diverso da do lado oposto. Forçando um pedaço a nota - confesso - dir-se-á que persiste aqui a tradição das tendas e lojas das arcarias sob o Hospital de Todos-os-Santos, e isto mais se acentua no último quarteirão que vamos percorrer, passada que seja a embocadura da Rua do Amparo. Quero dizer-te já que nesta Rua do Amparo, precisamente no cruzamento com a Rua dos Correeiros (trôço antigo da Rua das Galinheiras), e no eixo da rua, existiu a Ermida de N. Senhora do Amparo, dependente do Hospital de Todos-os-Santos, e desaparecida em 1755; dela adveio o nome a esta artéria. (...) De 1895 a 1920 existiu aqui um «Hotel Continental», que antes estivera em S. Domingos.
