Like the Ohio University, these schoolshave lost their one-time prestige, but theirvalue in the development of the new statecannot be too highly estimated. Theyserved their day and generation, and servedit well, and we of the third and fourth The Memorial Church built in commemo-ration of that movement, is one of thefinest in southern Ohio. Hillsboro is a beautiful residential town,nestling among her many hills, quiet andpeaceful, even her railroad station beingtucked snugly under a hill. Whether thislatter was so placed to hide the train anddeaden its noise, or whether there was notenough smooth ground near the town toplace the tracks and station on the samelevel, it is hard to say. However, onesfirst and last view of Hillsboro from therailroad is very picturesque.

THE MAMMOTH COAL PIER OF THE BALTIMORE & OHIO RAILROAD. THE importance of the soft coal trafficand the natural advantages enjoyed byBaltimore as a deep water ocean porthave led the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, inthe 74th year of its corporate existence, toconstruct at Curtis Bay the largest oceandock in the United States. A year or more ago the increasing de-mand for the different qualities of steamand gas coals from Western Maryland,Pennsylvania and West Virginia, convincedthe officials of the Company that betterfacilities were needed in Baltimore. Locust Point was the unloading terminal,and the several coal companies had docks,over which about 300 cars could be handledin one day. The cars used generally in thepast carried from 25 to 30 tons of coal.The pressed steel car came into existenceand 50 tons became the load. This in-creased carrying capacity on a tare notmuch more than is met with in cars ofsmaller capacity opened up undreamed ofpossibilities. Then came the foreign de
