English: This scene depicts a farce in which a quack doctor examines a farm animal's urine sample to diagnose its illness. Members of the audience are being robbed while distracted by the show, as pointed out by an onlooker at the right. It illustrates a "booth stage", a platform of planks raised on barrels or trestles with a curtained "backstage" area. This medieval design was easily set up and taken down, either for storage or to move to another town or village. They might be set up in the yard of an inn, a marketplace, or village green. The portable booth stage continued in use into the 18th century, both for seasonal events like fairs and for touring productions, which might include not only actors but minstrels, jongleurs, and mountebanks. This image originates in a 1542 songbook from Bruges, Chansonnier de Zeghere van Male, (Recueil de Chants Religieux et Profanes), Cambrai Bibliothèque municipale, Ms 126, folio 53r. |
