English: Border crossing on Dere Street At this point Dere Street, the old Roman road from York, crosses the Scottish border. The route survived as an important road into Scotland until the time of the destruction of the Border abbeys in the 16th century. The Pennine Way, Britain's first National Trail, keeps to the right of the fence here en route to Kirk Yetholm. Blackhall Hill NT7811 lies on the horizon. |
