English: Boreham Airfield Memorial. This is a closer view of 104080 it is a memorial to those who served at Boreham Airfield in WW2. The airfield was in, common with many USAAF bases in Essex
used by Ninth Airforce B26's. Operations commenced in March 1944 and effectively concluded with airborne troops leaving for Operation Varsity (the crossing of the Rhine). Until recently this was one of the best-preserved WW2 airfields in Essex much of the site is now being erased by gravel extraction. The blue signs are for the Essex Police Air Support Unit who have their base in the 269076 together with the Essex Air Ambulance. |
