English: Bottlesford: A Quiet Lane Wiltshire County Council introduced their Quiet Lane scheme in the Vale of Pewsey in 2003. From the Council's website the aims of the scheme are fivefold:

To encourage walking, cycling and horse riding on the Quiet Lanes Network To encourage considerate driving on the Quiet Lanes Network To preserve the character and tranquillity of the Quiet Lanes Network To encourage less car use on the Quiet Lanes Network To maintain essential access

A Quiet Lane is formally indicated by the wooden posts with the signs as the one to the left, and on reaching the end of a Quiet Lane there is a similar sign but with bars across it, rather like those on standard road signs indicating the end of a zone with parking restrictions.

This is all very laudable, and no doubt the residents know all about them, but as a stranger unexpectedly coming across the signs for the first time I have to say that it was totally unclear to me how I was expected to moderate my driving behaviour - yet another example of how local authorities cater for the needs of residents and blithely ignore the fact that strangers need to use the roads too, blanket residents' parking only schemes being the particular bête noire.

Needless to say, but in case anyone misunderstands this, the information in the first paragraph was gleaned from the Council's website after returning home.
