Summary edit
DescriptionBoulder with possible cup-and-ring marks - geograph.org.uk - 1362988.jpg |
English: Boulder with possible cup-and-ring marks This boulder is referred to in the WoSAS database: http://www.wosas.net/wosas_site.php?id=7790
However, the directions given in the original comments from 1971 are a little confused. This line of boulders, extending for forty metres down a hillside, is so distinctive as to be unmistakable. However it runs in a WSW-ENE direction. The lowest boulder is located at the eastern end of the line, (slightly) further north than the other boulders. Its position is NS 45730 76621 (±5 metres or so). As the database record shows, opinion is divided on whether there really are traces of cup-and-ring markings on this rock. I am also undecided, but, for a close-up view of some markings that may have prompted the original report, see: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1362983 The body of water in the background is Loch Humphrey, a reservoir, with a distinctive tongue of land extending into it: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/961037 Another item of archaeological interest is recorded in the vicinity of Loch Humphrey; I looked for it, but without success: http://www.wosas.net/wosas_site.php?id=7795 (the directions are again a little dubious; e.g., 30.48m is exactly 100 feet, not 300 yards). |
