English: One of 6,330 prints in the 45 volumes of the Bowyer Bible in Bolton Museum, England. The six volumes of the Macklin Bible have been expanded by careful grangerisation.
English: Head-piece to the rest of the chapters of the book of Esther, vignette with two dragons fighting; letterpress in two columns below and on verso. 1815. Inscriptions: Lettered below image with production detail: "P J de Loutherbourg del." , "J Landseer fecit" and publication line: "Published Novr. 5, 1815 by T Cadell & W Davies". Print made by John Landseer. Dimensions: height: 492 millimetres (sheet); width: 387 millimetres (sheet). EXPLANATION IN CADELL & DAVIES: “Head-piece to the Book of ESTHER. In the eleventh chapter, verses 5 and 6, we are made acquainted with a dream of Mardocheus, predictive of the sufferings and triumph of the Jewish nation during the reign of Artaxerxes. ‘The two geat dragons came forth to fight, and their cry was great.” This is the subject of the Vignette; and it is obviously allusive to that contest for royal favour, between Esther and Mardocheus on the one side, and Aman on the other, which is detailed in the book of Esther.” |
