Summary edit

Description
English: Veins in rhyolitic metatuffs in the Silurian of Maine, USA.

The criss-crossing veins seen here look like they're composed of quartz (SiO2 - silica). Such vein networks are referred to as boxwork or stockwork. "Boxwork" is incorrectly asserted by some to be a cave feature only.

The host rocks are part of a Upper Silurian volcanic succession called the Cranberry Island Series. It mostly consists of rhyolitic volcanic breccias, volcanic tuffs, and rhyolite lava flows. These are metamorphosed rhyolitic volcanic tuffs in the middle member of the series, which is the most voluminous of the three members.

The dark orangish brown coloration is iron oxide staining.
