It not only disposesus to friendship and sociability with our fellow-men in gen-eral, but also inspires the feeling of attachment for dumbanimals under our care. The fondness which many menbestow on horses and dogs, springs from the instinctiveactivity of this faculty. It is the bond of union amongmen, and the basis of society. In the lower animals it isexhibited in the gregarious instinct. Some animals, as thelion, the tiger, and the eagle, live by themselves, and never ORGANS OF THE SOCIAL AFFECTIONS. 49 associate with others of their kind. On the other hand,sheep, horses, cattle, and many varieties of birds, fishes,and insects, are bound together by a community of feelingwhich appears to afford them pleasure and satisfaction, andwhich occasions them much uneasiness when they are sepa-rated from their fellows. Pigs sometimes refuse to eat, andhorses and oxen have been known to pine and become sickwhen deprived of accustomed companions.
