Summary
editDescriptionBrampton Wood - geograph.org.uk - 311873.jpg |
English: Brampton Wood 'Sentinel' oaks near the entrance to Brampton Wood. The wood is a Sight of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) owned by the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough Wildlife Trust and open as a Nature Reserve. It is an ancient wood, listed in the Domesday Book, that was once part of the much larger Harthay forest. Although much of the wood was felled during World Wars and some areas were planted with conifers, it is still a good example of a large ancient wood - being the second largest in Cambridgeshire. Look out for hairstreak and white admiral butterflies. Dormice were successfully introduced in the 1990s. http://www.wildlifebcnp.org/reserves/reserve.php?reserveid=39 |
