Top is a woman (the Motherland) and a group consisting of Marshal Peixoto, the figures of Tiradentes, Jose Bonifacio and Benjamin Constant, which appear from the flag of the Republic. Floriano Vieira Peixoto (30 April 1839 – 29 July 1895), born in Ipioca (today a district of the city of Maceió in the State of Alagoas), nicknamed the "Iron Marshal", was a Brazilian soldier and politician, a veteran of the Paraguayan War, and the second President of Brazil. He is the first Vice President of Brazil to have succeeded a former President mid-term. The monument inaugurated on April 21, 1910, reflects the positive spirit in the early republic, extolling Brazilian nationality with allegorical groups the indigenous, Portuguese, black and Catholic presence in Brazil. |
