Description
English: Breach in river wall. Long before "managed retreat" became a catchphrase, this area of the Blyth estuary east of Blythburgh had suffered badly in the East Coast Floods in 1953 with breaches in the river wall causing grazing marshes to be flooded and lost. After a while, the unequal struggle was given up in some places and much of the land up to the A12 is now covered at high tide 61221. In the November 2007 tidal surge, more gaps were opened in the river wall and footpaths along the south bank near this point became impassable. The "Historic Map" shows the river as much more contained and, as a result, a much larger acreage of useable marshland.
