Invasive breast cancers secrete enzymes that cut through surrounding areas in order to spread.

Summary

Description
English: Invasive breast tumor secreting enzymes

This is an invasive breast tumor. The green fluorescence is dye quenched collagen IV (a component of human breast stromal tissue). Invasive tumors like to invade into the surrounding area in order to spread. The green fluorescence shows that the collagen in the matrix has been broken down by secreted enzymes and the tumor cells are getting ready to spread.

Other Information: This is a single differential contrast image of a tumor, taken at 20x magnification with a Zeiss LSM 780 fluorescent microscope. Taken at Wayne State University, Detroit
