Summary edit

Description
English: Breese Stevens Field, located nine blocks east of the State Capitol in Madison, Wisconsin, is the city's oldest sports park. It is named for Breese Stevens (1834-1903), a New York native who moved to Wisconsin in 1856 to look after family land interests. Stevens became mayor of Madison in 1884 and a University of Wisconsin regent in 1891. The city purchased the land in 1923 and commissioned the local architectural firm Claude and Starck to build a brick grandstand in 1925. In 1934, an exterior surrounding stone wall built of quarry rock from Hoyt Park was added as a project of the Civil Works Administration. Until the mid-1960s, this was the only city park with lights, and almost all major outdoor events took place here, including major and minor league baseball, all Madison high school football games, and even midget car racing.
