The driver of this Volkswagen Jetta, a 43 year old woman from Islandia, N.Y., was arrested for driving while intoxicated on Friday, January 27, 2012, by the MTA Police Department. Suffolk County Police pulled her from the car moments before it was struck by a LIRR train at the Brentwood Road railroad crossing in Bay Shore, Long Island. The railroad crossing warning lights and gates were functioning normally at the time the car became stuck on the tracks. The car was struck by LIRR train #2710, the 4:06 p.m. departure from Hunterspoint Avenue, Queens, due Montauk at 6:45 p.m. About 300 people on board the train that struck this car were delayed 100 minutes as a result of this collision and the resulting subsequent congestion. The train's engineer was not injured. Additional trains were delayed. Eastbound train service on the Montauk Branch was restored at 6:35 p.m. and westbound service was restored at 7:09 p.m. Photo by MTA Police Department. |
