In China one sees many peculiar customs amongthe people, but none are more distressing than thatof arresting the growth of the feet in childhood, sothat when the girl baby has grown to womanhood

Inearly childhood, when the bones and cartilage aresoft, the feet are bandaged and compressed in such a way that growth is impossible. For several yearsthe process is said to be extremely painful, and thelittle victim to the demands of custom and fashioncan only cry and moan in agony until the feet be-come wasted and bloodless, and insensible to pain.The accompanying photograph of a Chinese ladysfoot shows that all the toes, ex-cept the great one, are turned un-der and are to be seen only on thesole of the foot. Notice, too, howthe heel and the sole of the foothave been pressed together untilthe member is disfigured and dis-torted out of all semblance of thenatural foot.
