There are two locks on the Shropshire Union Canal at Hack Green, changing the water level by twelve feet (about 3.7 metres). When Thomas Telford engineered the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal (as it was then) he tried to avoid locks as much as possible. He also took the expensive option of taking the straight line wherever he could by building long embankments and cuttings. By these two ploys the company could keep traffic moving with fewer delays and cover the distance in fewer days - important in the 1830s because the railways were beginning to take business away.
