Summary edit

Description
English: Bridleway, Pits Wood. This bridleway runs alongside the edge of Pits Wood, or Pugpits as it used to be called. Pug has many meanings, a dog, an elf or a hobgoblin, a fox, a boar's footprint, but Pits may refer to nearby limestone workings which may be of Roman origin, 906807. Pits Wood is mainly ancient and semi-natural woodland with some replanted areas. Further on the bridleway runs between Chilmark Common and Moses Wood before turning sharp left, in the next grid square, to Portash. This is because the footpaths ahead and to the right at that point have been closed since the then Air Ministry acquired all the land around Chilmark Quarries in 1936, see 905805.
