Summary edit

Description Half-plate tintype with applied color of a half portrait of Brigadier General Carnot Posey in uniform. The front case cover is missing. An attached note reads "This picture is sent, for you to make the shape of the shoulders as mutch [sic] like it as possible, the shirt and coat collar to fit and appear in the painting as it does in this picture, with stars; and wreath around the collar. no plates on shoulders wanted. R. M. Taylor" This photograph of Brig. Gen. Carnot Posey was taken in Corinth, Mississippi in 1862. Photographed with the crescent insignia of a Mississippi militia colonel, Posey had been an officer in Col. Jefferson Davis's Mississippi Rifles during the Mexican War. After a successful legal career (including a stint as U.S. district attorney), Posey raised a company for Confederate service and became colonel of the 16th Mississippi Infantry. He was in command of a brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia in 1863 when he was severely wounded in the thigh at the Battle of Bristoe Station, Virginia. He was transported to Charlottesville, Virginia, where he was hospitalized in the same West Lawn room he had occupied while studying law at the University of Virginia. It was in this room that he died of infection November 16, 1863. From the Collections of the Confederate Memorial Literary Society managed by the Virginia Historical Society
