Description
"This portrait was bought by Queen Victoria as a portrait of Mary I. The later suggestion that it represents Margaret, Countess of Lennox seems equally unlikely. The sitter is reprented wearing a black gown, with a white linen ruff, holding her gloves in her right hand and a red rose in her left. At her waist hangs a cameo in a rich jewelled setting and round her wrists are bracelets decorated with an armillary sphere."
