Title
English: British three-masted bark MELANOPE at anchor, Washington, ca. 1900
Description
English: Handwritten on verso: Melanope, 3 m. bark In 1906 she was bound for Tacoma from Eureka when she got caught in a gale storm and was tipped over. The Captain, his wife and two daughters, and the crew, spent the night in the rigging, and all got in a lifeboat in the morning. They were picked up the schooner Wm. H. Smith and taken to Port Townsend. MELANOPE was towed to Astoria, pumped out and sold to Capt. James Griffiths of Seattle, who converted her to a barge (p. 127). (Source: Newell, Gordon, ed. "The H.W.
