English: John Grandisson triptych now in the British Museum. Tag on exhibit states: "John Grandisson triptych. John Grandisson, bishop of Exeter from 1327-69, was a mad of education, taste and influence. This rare example of English ivory carving is extremely unusual because it carries Grandisson's coat of arms on its wings. The central panel shows the coronation of the Virgin with the Crucifixion. Grandisson was devoted to the Virgin Mary, and sains Peter, Paul, Stephen, and Thomas Becket, represented here. About 1330, England, ivory. PE 1861,0416.1" See BM database entry for more details. |
