Русский: Гимнастика. Гимнастикой в Древней Греции занимались с ранней юности в особых заведениях «гимназиях». Прилагаемый план гимназии, составленный по Витрувию, заимствованный у проф. Лесгафта («Руков. по физич. образованию детей школьного возраста», ч. I, СПб. 1888 г., стр. 9), указывает, насколько учение в Греции было связано с Г. и исполнением разных гигиенических мер. Четырехугольное здание, с двором (А) в середине, с трех сторон было занято помещениями (G) для бесед философов и риторов, отделенными от двора колоннами. Одна же сторона была разбита на несколько отдельных, более мелких помещений для сбора юношей, обмываний, игр и т. д. На середине этого последнего корпуса (Н) помещался большой зад (Ephoebium), продолговатый, с местами для сидений, назначенный для сбора юношей; рядом с ним располагались в одну сторону к входу: corryceum (1) — помещение для некоторых игр греков, в мяч, и здесь же висел на длинной веревке мешок с песком; connisterium (2) для песка, которым, приготовляясь к борьбе, обсыпали тело и растирали руки, чтобы они не скользили; frigida lavatio (3) для обмывания холодной водой; и в другую сторону от Ephoebium: elaeothesium (4) для растирания маслом; frigidarium (5) для охлаждения после купанья; ход (6) для истопника бань; соncamerata sudatio (7) для потения в водяном пару; laconicum (8) для потения в сухом воздухе и calida lavatio (9) для обмывания теплою водою. Позади здания находился двор, также четырехугольный, усаженный деревьями и кустами (В); в одной стороне его были назначены места для борьбы, кулачного боя и вообще гимнастических упражнений (D) и для бега (С), а в другой стороне двора находилась крытая галерея (Е), также для различных упражнений; кнутри от боковых помещений находились некрытые галереи (F), также для занятий гимнастикой.
