DescriptionBroken trees after ex-hurricane Irene 28 August 2011 Quebec City.jpg |
English: By the time Irene hit Canada on Sunday 28 August 2011 in the St. Lawrence region of Quebec and northwestern New Brunswick, it had been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone. The storm centre followed the Appalachian mountain range, crossed the Saint Lawrence River near Matane and reached Labrador late on 29 August.
About 125 millimetres of rain fell on the province of Quebec and wind gusts of up to 113 km/h, several roads were flooded, trees snapped and power lines were downed. All in all, though, Canada appeared to emerge relatively unscathed from the remnants of the powerful hurricane that killed at least 40 people in the U.S. and left millions of Americans without electricity. As Irene churned to the northeast toward Labrador, many of the wind warnings that were in place for Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were dropped. On 28 August at night, Hydro-Quebec reported approximately 250,000 customers, which means all over 750,000 individuals without electricity. |
