Summary edit

Description

This cemetery is located on the north side of Interstate 90 at Exit 305 at Bozeman. It is no longer being used, but is maintained. It was established in 1890, and ceased accepting burials around 1920.

It is not the oldest cemetery in Bozeman. Sunset Hills Cemetery -- the city's largest -- was founded in 1872. It is also not the oldest Catholic-only cemetery in Bozeman. Holy Cross Cemetery (which also closed in 1920) also was formed in 1890. Today, most Catholics are buried in a Catholics-only section (if they so choose) at Sunset Hills. Sunset Hills, by the way, is city-owned and operated.

Rt. Rev. John Brondel was the first Bishop of the Archdiocese of Helena (which at that time encompassed the entire state of Montana). Brondel was born in Bruges, Belgium, in 1842 and was a priest by the age of 22. Three years later, he came to Washington Territory and began his ministry in the United States. He was made Bishop of Vancouver Island in 1879, and Vicar-Apostolic over Montana Territory in 1883. When the apostolic vicarate over Montana Territory was turn into a diocese on March 7, 1884, he was made the first bishop. He was gregarious, funny, democratic, and beloved. He died November 3, 1903. Many cemeteries in Montana are named for him.
