Description

Brush-Bagnall 480hp 0-6-0 diesel-electric shunter (2nd batch) No.3002 of 1951, British Steel Corporation (originally Steel Company of Wales) No.702, on shed at the Abbey Works, Port Talbot, 09/69. Scanned photograph taken with Kowa SET. Inspired by the LMS/BR/EE 400hp 0-6-0 diesel shunters, the Brush-Bagnall shunters for SCOW were built in two batches: Nos.2971-4 of 1951-3, 2971 to Lever Brothers, Port Sunlight (later used by a contractor to dismantle railways in Mid Wales), 2972-74 to SCOW, Abbey Works, Port Talbot as Nos.713 (initially SCOW Trostre Tinplate Works, Llanelli No.2), 711,712, with Mirrlees 6-cyl TLT6 engine of 355hp; Nos.3000-3 of 1951, SCOW Abbey Works Nos.701, 702, 703, 704 (initially SCOW Trostre Tinplate Works, Llanelli No.1), with Mirrlees TLST6 of 480 hp.

Many similar engines with Mirrlees or National engines were subsequently built for industrial uses - but none for BR.
