Léglise de Notre-Dame de Bon-Secours qui, dans un passé reculé sappelaitNotre-Dame dans la Guirlande de la Vigne, reconstruite à la fin du dix-septièmesiècle, avait été entièrement restaurée en i825. Léglise des Riches-Claires, qui date de la fin du quinzième siècle, fut dédiée àNotre-Dame des Sept-Douleurs et dépendit successivement du couvent des frèresHyéronimites ou frères de la Vie commune et du coùvent des sœurs Urbanistes ouRiches-Claires, avait été, en i833, considérablement agrandie et embellie. Lestravaux avaient été exécutés sous la direction de Vanderstraeten et sur linitiativedu curé de léglise, M. Ocreman.

Le moulin de la rue de Middeleek.Dessin original de E. Puttaert. 206 BRUXELLES MODERNE. Léglise Notre-Dame du Finistère est église paroissiale depuis 1646; on perçaitalors la Longue rue Neuve, à travers des terrains vagues, des jardins potagers et desvergers. La façade fut reconstruite en 1700. Elle resta inachevée. Le dôme datede 1828; lAssomption de la Vierge, en ronde-bosse, qui surmonte le portique,de 1843. Léglise Saint-Nicolas eut des destinées glorieuses. Cest elle qui supportaitautrefois le beffroi communal, haute tour carrée dont la solidité ne correspondaitpas à la grandeur symbolique de son rôle. On sait que, fort ébranlée déjà par lessecousses que lui avaient infligées les boulets français, elle sécroula en 1714, pliantsous le poids des années et nayant plus la force de résister aux poussées brutales desouragans. Presque en face de léglise Saint-Nicolas était, comme nous lavons dit plus haut,une vaste agglomération de maisons, au centre desquelle
