Les cachots de la porte de Hal.Daprès loriginal de P. Vitzthumb. qui fut démolie après labolition des octrois en 1860, et dont les pavillons, quidécorent aujourdhui lentrée du Bois, furent construits en i836, par larchitectePayen, remplaça Importa Namurcensis delà deuxième enceinte, qui avait été bâtielors du renouvellement des fortifications, de 1666 à 1675, et qui fut démolie en1785. Plus bas, dans la rue de Namur actuelle, à la hauteur de la rue des Petits-Carmes, subsista jusquen 1761 lancienne porte de Coudenberg, porta Frigidimontis, dans laquelle le duc dAlbe fit enfermer des prisonniers dÉtat et qui, sousladministration dAlexandre Farnèse, servit de dépôt aux archives du Brabant,conservées primitivement à Vilvorde. Une rue appelée CoudcnbergscJie stcenwcgh, ouEntre les deux portes, se retrouve sur les anciens plans de la ville. Le dessin de la (1) Voir la Porte rie Hal restaurée, dans la Belgique illustrée, t. 72 BRUXELLES A TRAVERS LES AGES. porte de Namur du xvme siècle, fait daprès nature par Vitzthumb, ne ressembleguère au fac-similé publié par M. Colinet daprès un dessin de la collection duduc dArenberg. Mais elle avait été dépouillée des ornements qui la recouvraientune centaine dannées auparavant. Faisant partie de la deuxième enceinte, entre la porte de Namur et la porte de Hal,sélevait la Grosse-Tour; entre les portes de Namur et de Louvain, la Tour-Bleue.
