Bucharest, Romania

"România este singura țară ortodoxă care nu are o catedrală impunătoare. Despre necesitatea unei asemenea catedrale a scris însuși Eminescu, în 1881 (cu bani de la Loteria Națională). Primul patriarh, Miron Cristea, a început demersurile, marii intelectuali interbelici au militat pentru o catedrală a Mânturii Neamului, și nu pentru o simplă catedrală patriarhală. Diferența de semnificație este esențială. Teoctist a dorit cel mai mult înfăptuirea acestui vis. S-au stabilit pentru construirea acestei catedrale patru locații: Piața Unirii, unde s-a așezat o cruce, pe care a sărutat-o Papa Ioan Paul al II-lea la 8 mai 1999; lângă Biblioteca Națională; în Parcul episcopului Filaret (devenit din 1906, în urma expoziției realizărilor acelor 40 de ani de domnie, Parcul "Carol I”); apoi lângă Casa Poporului (sau Palatul Parlamentului). De ce nu s-a înfăptuit? Din cauza politicului, care trebuia să acorde teren pentru o astfel de construcție. Dar Dumnezeu vede și să te ferească Dumnezeu de pedeapsa Sa!" - Tudor Nedelcea
