As to the seasons for doingthe different kinds of work, it may be said thatgeneral improvements, tile drainage, reballasting,etc., can best be carried on from late spring tolate autumn, but all such work should, as far aspossible, be planned and arranged for beforehand,so that the track may not be disturbed for re-ballasting just after the section gang has com-pleted a thorough surfacing. Work trains andfloating gangs for ditching, ballasting, wideningcuts, etc., and special gangs on new interlockingplants, rearrangement of yards, repairing orbuilding structures, etc., may be worked at anytime from the end of one winter to the beginningof another. For the ordinary work on the sec-tions no set rules or program of procedure canbe formulated, as the requirements vary in dif-ferent sections of the country.
