Description
English: Caption on image: Kuzgamapa Hot Springs, Kougarok, Alaska. July 11th 1907. F.H. Nowell, Nome, 5605.
Kougarok is located at the junction of the Kougarok and Kuzitirin Rivers, 15 miles northwest of Mount Bendeleben, Seward Peninsula. In 1900, at the beginning of gold mining on the interior of Seward Peninsula, a small settlement known as Checkers was reported. This was the point where loads on small boats from Marys Igloo were transferred to pack horses and then shipped to placer camps.
