English: Buildings bordering onto the yard at Salamanca Farm. Salamanca Farm received its name from a former landowner, General Sir Robert Harvey, who fought with Wellington in the Spanish Peninsular War, and on his return, renamed his farms after the battles he had taken part in. General Harvey served under the Command of Major-General Lord Hill and as made a Major and Assistant-Quarter-Master-General of the Portuguese army in 1810. In 1811 he as appointed to General-headquarters of Marshall Lord Wellington where he served as a liaison officer with the Portuguese troops in the field and as Chief of the Staff of the Portuguese army in his absence. For his distinguished services in the Peninsular War he was made a knight of the Order of the Tower and Sword. Present-day Salamanca Farm raises cattle and free range chickens. Produce is sold in the farm shop which is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Salamanca farmhouse, including the Guest House, is Victorian in character but some parts are much older. A public footpath leads from here, past the farm's cattle yards > 1539616 in north-easterly direction, where it emerges on Chandler Road > 1539506 by Whiteford Farm in Upper Stoke. |
