| Description |
This is my take on the classic postcard angle at Bulguksa. Around me are professional photographers with their SLRs and tripods, but I am still making do with a crummy point-and-shoot, a three-year-old Pentax Optio S50, that I would retire a month later. The Blue Cloud and White Cloud Bridges form the far staircase, and are designated National Treasure No. 23. The Lotus Flower and Seven Treasures Bridges are nearer, at the left edge of this photo, and are designated as National Treasure No. 22. Exactly three years before this date, Bulguksa hosted US President George W. Bush, visiting southeastern Korea to attend the 21-nation Asia-Pacific Economic Council summit in Busan. Now, with Bush a lame-duck and me looking forward to a new era under Barack Obama, I am feeling that my presence here is partly to drive away the old era spirits Bush had left behind. I was never a fan of Bush's, nor a fan of American style evangelical Christianity that Bush, South Korea's own President Lee Myung-bak, and the Korean-Americans all overwhelmingly support (and use to crack down on Buddhists, a key South Korean domestic political issue of 2008). |
