Ces lignes sont seulement destinées à fixerles impressions dun des heureux témoins de cettemémorable et incontestable découverte. —■ De lexamen des nombreux débris passés en revue,quelques-uns fort anciens, mais insuffisamment datés,pour la plupart appartenant, sans le moindre doutepossible, aux divers moments du quaternaire moyen,il ressort lexistence, à cette période, en Europe,dun type humain notablement inférieur à toutesles races actuelles, et moins éloigné quaucun deuxde lorganisation physique des singes anthropoïdes ;de ce type humain, des vestiges atténués ont subsisté,rares et sporadiques, dans nos populations et jus- - 61 — quà notre époque. Aux antipodes, les Tasmaniens,les Australiens (fig. 2), ont formé, jusquà ces der-niers temps, un vaste groupe humain qui, par denombreux points communs, rappelle cette forme an-cestrale à un plus haut degré quaucune race vivanteou fossile.
