istrators have been furnished to the State in large numbers.There are hundreds whom the college has faithfully trainedand started in the work, but whom the State has failed to holdin this field of activity because the profession has not hithertooffered the opportunities they had earned. Some have turnedto other States; some to other occupations. But of the manystill in the Virginia educational field, the first selection madeby the State Board of Education for expert supervision in-cluded twenty-one William and Mary men as Division Superin-tendents. Half of the present State Board of Examiners andhalf of all those who have been members of that Board sinceits organization are alumni of the college. Now that there has arisen a true profession of public edu-cation, now that there is a field well worth the time andefforts of a capable, educated man, it is believed that the in-fluence of William and Mary—the college that trains men toteach—will grow more apparent with each passing year.

William and Mary College 9 a jf ortunate Combination* William and Mary is one of the few institutions in whichpolicy and circumstances have brought about a happy combi-nation of a high-grade, scientific and classical college andteachers training school. There is all the scholarly tone, spiritand traditions of the best of the colleges; for surely none isricher in historic associations. The life and organization ofthe students is distinctly collegiate. The prospective lawyeror doctor elects his courses with reference to his needs andfinds them unaffected by any pedagogical bearing unless itbe that professors are a little more careful in presentationwhere many of the students are trained to observe and judgeteaching methods. The minister-to-be finds his classics andphilosophy undiluted but psychology and principles of mindand character building particularly stressed.
