I am visiting San Francisco for the Pride weekend - one that turned out to be the most historic of them all, thanks to the Supreme Court rulings that legal same-sex marriages cannot be denied federal benefits, and that Proposition 8, which had banned same-sex marriages in California in late 2008, is dead on a legal technicality. I must agree with that sentiment. An early key victory for California's gay community surrounded Proposition 6, the Briggs Initiative, which went on the ballot in 1978. Briggs, named after an Orange County legislator who sponsored it, and supported by singer Anita Bryant in Florida, would have banned openly gay schoolteachers; initially it had strong support, but after the gay community and the straight allies mobilized against it, was overwhelmingly defeated. Both Governor Ronald Reagan and President Jimmy Carter lent strong voices in defeating the first anti-gay ballot measure in California history. |
