A TRIO OF SMALL YORKSHIRES, OWNED BY W. ATLEE BURPEE i CO. SMALL ENGLISH YORKSHIRE PIGS. Our Small English Yorkshires (so called to distinguish them from the large, coarse breed) are unsurpassed. Our breeding animals are bred direct from imported stock, and of correct pedigree. The artist visited our herd recently for the express purpose cf making drawings from life of several of our breeding animab. The magnificent Boar, Burpee's Theodore, A. S. Y. H. B., No. 292; Sabrina B., No. 53' ; Bebe, No. 540, are well represented in the illustration given above. The sire of Theodore, No. 202, is Lord Theodore, 103. he b)' Dick Turpin II. loi. Dam, Flirt 111,317, by Diomede, 91; second dam, Flirt, 20S, by Sir John, 3S: third dam, Marchioness C, 84. by King George, 61 ; fourth dam, Duchess of Bristol, 100, by Duke of Yorkshire, imported: fifth dam. Flora, Si, imported. Lord Theo- dore won the second prize at New York State Fair, 1S84. Diomede won first prize at same fair, iSSi, and at Onondaga County Fair, iSSi, also second at Xew York State Fair, 1882. The sire of Bebe, No. 540, is Lord John II, 120; he by Lord John, 89. Dam, Yiolet Hambrook, 261 ; she by Lord John, 89. Sabrina'B., No. 537, was sired by Lord Rinaldo, 95 ; he by Rinaldo, 59. Dam. Sabrina, 184; she by Rinaldo, 59. Among other equally choice breeding animals, we can supply pigs from the following well-known sows : Flirt IX 538, Yorkshire Yiolet 535, Betina, Snow Drop, Snow Queen, Olivet, Yorkshire Diamond, and Proctor's Pomona. The general characteristics of the Small Yorkshires, as given by Mr. G.^Y. Harris, are; viz., very short in snout: well dished in face, with large jowls ; small, thin, erect ear, slightly pricked and forward (never lopped ) ; broad between the eyes; short in the neck ; lengthy in body; broad in loin; straight in the top line from the shoulder to the tail; have thick, broad, deep-cut hams and shoulders; are low in the fork ; full and deep in flank ; fine in bone, with short, stout, well-set legs ; and a full coat of fine, white hair. The Yorkshires are quiet in disposition, and are easiU* kept enclosed by fences that prove no barrier against the roaming propensities of other pigs. Thej- fatten at an early age. In fact, « some of our sows we cannot keep lean. They are characterized by smallness of bone and ofFal; careful experiments show them to waste less in dressing than any other breed. The flesh is far superior to that of coarser breeds for table use. They will produce more pork from a given amount of food consumed than any other breed. Our prices for first choice pigs, mated for breeding. 7iot akin, eight weeks old, are $15.00 each; $25.00 per pair; trio, boar and two sows, not akin, $37.00; single pig, three months old, $17.00; pair, three months old, $30.00; trio, three months old. $42.00 ; boars, ready for sers'ice, $25.00 to $50.00 each; sows in farrow, $30.00 to $60.00 each, accord- ing to age. Prices on pigs for exhibition purposes given on application. NOTE.—All pigs of this breed shipped by us will be registered, or entitled to registry- in the A. S. Y. Herd Book. Mass., writes:—The pair of Jersey Reds arrived in good condition. I did not expect such large and fine-looking pigs. I am more than pleased. Mrs. a. M.\NLOVE, Helena, Montana Territory,writes :— The Jersey Red pigs were received in good order, and I am much pleased with them. I was surprised to see them looking so well after their long journey.
