Burrell 5NHP three-speed single crank compound showman’s road locomotive no. 3509 Rajah (G6469) of 1913 in Bostock & Wombwells Gigantic Combination livery, at Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre, Lifton, Devon. Bostock & Wombwell in 1913 received their first Burrell No: 3509 Rajah to help with haulage but mainly to bring electricity to their shows. Based in Glasgow Bostock & Wombwell travelled extensively throughout Britain but not just by steam power, they used their animals for haulage too! This was mainly though because they acted as great advertising. Rajah so named after one of B & W lions was a well travelled engine, maybe even one of the most in showland. sparkarrester.org/2012/05/02/bostock-wombwell/ The firm A. Ruth & Sohn was a family of German organ builders, mainly fair organs produced in the period 1841-1938. Andreas Ruth (1817-1888) learned the organ building trade from Ignaz Brude. In 1841 he settled in Waldkirch, where he was engaged in the manufacture of clocks with toys and later barrel organs. His son Adolf Ruth I (1845-1907) took over leadership of the company in 1875 and began making larger barrel organs and in 1900 began producing book organs. His son Adolf Ruth II (1887-1938) took over in 1907. In early 1930 the slump began due to the advent of radio and gramophone. After the death of Adolf Ruth II the company was liquidated. The majority of the furniture was purchased by H. Voigt, Frankfurt. The organs of the firm A. Ruth & Sohn were considered by many to be the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of fairground organs. They were known to be particularly well-built instruments needing little maintenance, rarely needed to be retuned, and continued to play in nearly all weather conditions. nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._Ruth_und_Sohn |
