Afrikaans: Navorsers het platinumgroepelement-insluitings of sg. PGE's in 'n 20-tal diamante bestudeer wat naby die Bosveldkompleks in Suid-Afrika versamel is. Hierdie groot kompleks met 'n deursnit van honderde kilometers is een van min plekke ter wêreld waar PGE's in ontginbare hoeveelhede aangetref word. Die besonder antieke Bosveldkompleks – geoloë stel die ouderdom daarvan op net meer as 2 miljard jaar – is deur kristallisasie van die Bosveld-magmas in 'n massiewe korsmagmakamer gevorm. Korrels so klein as 'n paar mikrogram is deur die navorsers in die PGE's ontleed. Daar is bevind dat die isotopiese samestelling van die diamante se PGE's met dié van Bosveldertsminerale ooreenstem, wat aandui dat die hoofbron van Bosveldplatinum mantelmateriaal is. English: Researchers studied platinum group element (PGE) inclusions in some 20 diamonds collected near the Bushveld Complex in South Africa. The complex is vast, measuring hundreds of kilometers in length, and it is one of the few places in the world where PGEs are found in large enough quantities to be mined. The Bushveld Complex is also very old – geologists put its age at just over 2 billion years – and was formed by crystallization of the Bushveld magmas in a massive crustal magma chamber. The researchers looked at the PGEs in the diamonds, sometimes analyzing grains as small as a few micrograms. They found that the isotopic signatures of the PGEs in the diamonds and Bushveld ore minerals match, showing the main source of Bushveld platinum to be mantle, not crust falling into the magma chamber as previously thought.
