Summary edit

Description
English: Boncompagni Ludovisi Collection.

Head, neck and gilded cloak in bronze, ancient bust in red porphyry.

The bronze head is a 17th Century copy based on the famous equestrian head of Marcus Aurelius on the Capitoline, inserted onto an ancient bust in red porphyryof the first half of the 4th Century AD. Also added during the modern restoration works is the short cloak in gilded bronze, held over the right shoulder with a fibula that has not survived. The portrait, one of the most famous works in the Boncompagni Collection, was much appreciated in the antiquarian literature and was often mentioned in the diaries of visitors to Rome in the 17th and 18th Centuries.
