in order to save expense\ and that the most piousking raised other piers, and supported the dome, and thus itwas built, being raised more than 20 feet upwards abovethe original structure. This seems to imply that Justinianre-built the two eastern piers^ but that is inconsistent withthe contemporary account of Paulus, and would haveinvolved so much interference with the whole anatomyof the building, which bears no signs of such heroictreatment, that it is hardly credible. The later Byzantinehistorians copy Theophanes almost word for word, butoften bring in a little fresh matter. Cedrenus, writingin the nth century, after repeating the account ofTheophanes almost verbatim, says Justinian built oppo-site the interior piers four winding staircases by whichyou could mount as high as the dome, * making them * (f>vy6vT€s TTjv f^oBov. ^ AoiTTOP (TvviboDv 6 fvaf^fOTUTos fiaaikfiis ffytipfv aWovs irivaovs, Koiihi^aro tov rpovWov. Can these additions be the other piers of whichTheophanes speaks ? Here, however, it is impossible tobelieve that these buttress piers were originally shorter onplan than they are now, for they must always have reachedthe outer walls of the church (Fig. 23). If Justinianat this time added to them it must have been in theupper part only: of this, however, we must speak here-after. Zonaras, writing in the 12th century, also repeatsTheophaness words, but says distinctly that Justinianis said to have had the dome taken down and re-built25 ft. higher^Additional These accounts, written by statesmen and monks, height . -^ , given to copying a good deal from one another, and with oneexception long after the event, are not
