Thegallery runs all round, except where interrupted on theeast side by the opening to the apse which occupies bothstoreys. The aisle and gallery above it are each ceiledwith an annular vault, like the aisle of S. Costanza atRome, and in this way the awkwardness of the pro-trusion of the exedrae into the aisle is avoided, whichcauses such confusion in the aisle vaults of S. Vitale atRavenna. Plate XI

Ser-the octagon and has no pendentives, but 16 ribs, two on ITcchuseach face, and the panel between them is arched fromrib to rib. The angle of the octagon comes in the centreof a panel and runs up and loses itself in a rather artlessmanner. There are eight windows in the dome, oneover each face of the octagon.
