The wide pedimental gable end at S. Ambrogio is low- widepitched, covering both nave and aisles, and is partly centalconcealed by the abutting atrium, which disguises what ^^^^would otherwise have been an awkward proportion. Asimilar wide pedimental fa9ade at the two churches in Pavia Paviawhich have been mentioned has a very bare, unsatisfactoryappearance, only partly relieved by the practicable gallerythat ramps with the gable, and the small windows whichare the only other features except the doorways.
