aSR6fissaa?siT-fB-9ic*$apR/i>i- Another inscription in Lombardic lettering of the13th century records the foundation of this Cathedral inthe time of Alexander II (1061 —1073), Anselmo Badagiowho had been bishop of Lucca, the Pope who presentedthe consecrated banner to William of Normandy whenhe was about to invade England. There is howevernothing left of that building, and the body of the churchis in fully developed Italian Gothic, of which style it isone of the best examples. But the west front with itsstately portico is still Romanesque, though only built inthe 13th century. It consists of three large archesThe inlaid Opening into a portico or narthex of the whole width ofthe church, one arch being cramped by the tower andtherefore smaller than the others. Above are three tiers ofarcading, Pisan fashion, but enriched with inlays of blackand white (Plate LXX) in spandril and column, someof the latter being also carved. Martin, the patron ofthe church, on horseback, dividing his cloak with abeggar. These figures are perhaps a later addition, forthey seem too advanced in style for the date of thefa9ade, which is given by an inscription on a scroll heldby a little figure worked on the right hand colonnette ofthe lowest tier of arcading ; C?ILbCC nil.cont)i^ t)lTeL€ Guwecv LUCCA The figure itself no doubt represents the architect J^^^^^^Guidetto himself, whose right hand (dextra) wrought Guidettothese so lovely shafts.
