. They are of good Byzantinework somewhat like the Theodosian capital at Constan-tinople (v. sup. Plate V, p. 55). ^^\ The narthex forms a fine Hall, re-callinof on a smaller narthex ^ scale that of S. Sophia. It ended each way in an apse,and would no doubt have been handsomely decoratedwith marble and mosaic. It was originally only onestorey in height like the three other sides of the atrium,and the back wall was carried up so as to enclose thetwo triangular spaces and hide the oblique sides of theoctagon. The triangular chambers thus formed werevaulted and had a door to the stair turret, and a triplearch to the gallery or matroneum.The stair- The North turret has the base of a huge brick newel, and a few of the lowest steps still remaining. The otherhas the bottom of the newel, but the stairs are modernand of wood. This turret has been raised to form acampanile, but the other retains the brick dome abovethe entrance to the gallery beyond which originallyneither of them rose. turrets
