n gold grounds, within a borderwhich originally no doubt was doubled round the arris ofthe arch on to the wall face in the manner usual inByzantine work. The aisles are lighted by a nearly continuous arcadeof round headed windows high up in the walls interruptedat intervals by solid piers. The mullion shafts are taperedfrom base to necking and carry simple capitals throughthe wall. A similar series of window arcades higher inthe wall lights the triforium gallery (Fig. 12). Thewindows probably had wooden frames to hold the glass,for there are traces of some method of fixing them\ Both these tiers of windows seem to have been discovered lately, forthey do not appear in Signor Rivoiras illustration, of 1901. At present thewindows are open to the air, for the mosque is disused, and is under repair,a new roof having lately been put on ; and the floor is encumbered with hugetimbers the debris of the old one, which I understand was damaged by fire. De-metrius,Salonica Besides the western entrance the Eski Djouma hasa south porch with a barrel vault springing from dwarfpilasters with flat Byzantine capitals; a very interestingfeature of the building. The apse (Fig. 12), which is semicircular both insideand out, is lighted by three very large round headedwindows, and has no architectural feature outside but asimple moulding at the impost level of the window arches.Inside, the semi-dome was decorated with fresco painting,as were also the soffits of the aisle windows, which werepainted in patterns like mosaic, inside and outside of aline which marks the place of the window frame. It is characteristic of the early date of this churchthat it is without the triple arrangement at the east endof the later Byzantine ritual; and has, besides the singlegreat apse, only a small niche at the end of the northaisle, which perhaps served as a skeuophylacion.
