and latterlyGascony, It was in this district that the influence ofByzantine art was most strongly felt, and the mostremarkable instance of it is the well-known church ofS. Front at Perigueux which stands alone among Frenchexamples. It consists of two parts, of different dates. At the west end there remains part of a basilican churchwith nave and aisles, which probably finished eastwardwith three apses. It had transepts which still exist asdetached buildings, the original crossing between themand the eastern parts having been destroyed to make wayfor the second church (Fig. 75). This later building isa five domed cruciform building, so closely modelled onthe plan of S. Marks at Venice that there can be no Diet. Rats. I. 38, vin. 472. This church is illustrated by Rivoira,Origini, etc. vol. i. p. 217—220. I have not seen it myself. 2 Mr Phend Spiers gives a conjectural restoration of the plan of theLatin church. See his article on S. Front in Architecture East and West.,Batsford, 1905.

Not only in plan but in dimensions the two correspondvery nearly, and De Verneilh has observed that thedifferences of measurement are practically such as wouldarise from the difference between the Italian and Frenchfoot. There are certain variations in the constructionof the domes and pendentives which seem to show thatthe architect of S. Front was not a Greek himself thoughhe worked on a Greek model.
